Mondays for older kids: Design Lab

4:30- 6:00, ages 10-14

This class is specifically for older kids (though no experience is necessary). Looking and learning about contemporary artists who work with clay, kids will create paintings and sculptures using clay, colored slip, and glazes.  They will make ceramic wall paintings, tiles, and 3-D sculptures inspired by artists like Betty Woodman and Isamu Noguchi.  Kids will also use the wheels, slab roller and extruder.  Taught by McKendree Key & Ash Donnelly.

Tuesdays:  Animals in Action

4:00- 5:30, Ages 5-9 COOP SCHOOL PICKUP

Humans have been making animals and people out of clay for thousands of years.  In this class, kids will hone their fine motor skills by handbuilding a set of clay figurines.  They will learn about the Ancestral Pueblan people and how and why they made similar figures.  Kids will also learn how to throw a form on the wheel, and use the extruder and slab roller.  Taught by Dany Rose & Ash Donnelly.

Wednesdays: Meketre's Tomb Project

4:00- 5:30, Ages 5-9 BROOKLYN WALDORF SCHOOL PICKUP

In this class, kids will collaborate on a permanent public art piece: Artshacks' window well.  The tomb of Egyptian Offical Meketre was found in a hidden chamber in 1920: 24 amazing models depict daily life in Ancient Egypt.  Based on this fascinating example, we will create our own model of life in 2016 for display in our underground window well.  Kids will collaborate to create the piece, but will also be making things to take home.  Kids will gain skills using the wheels, slab roller and extruder. Taught by McKendree Key & Ash Donnelly.

Thursdays:  This Ceramic Life

4:00- 5:30, Ages 5-9 COMMUNITY ROOTS SCHOOL BUS PICKUP

Design and create your own objects - pots, mugs, bowls and plates- while studying the amazing work of the American Indians of the Southwest.  Learn how to use the pottery wheel, the slab roller and how to handbuild. Taught by Dany Rose & Ash Donnelly.

Friday: Gnomes Are Potters Too  

4:00- 5:30, Ages 5-9   BROOKLYN NEW SCHOOL BUS PICKUP

Create a miniature world in clay! Throw the tiniest pot on the wheel, make miniscule furniture, and even build a teeny tiny clay house.  Gnomes do it all the time- why shouldn't we?!  Kids will learn handbuilding techniques, as well as how to use the wheels, slab roller and extruder.  Taught by Dany Rose & Ash Donnelly.
