Class Descriptions

Artshack welcomes all schools and other orginizations to come and learn about the healing powers of clay. Our teachers have a wealth of experience teaching children to work with clay. Foremost, these classes are experience based, we seek to introduce children to clay and ignite their imaginations. Children have the opportunity to make a piece of their own that they can keep forever.

The Basics

  • Classes take place in our Annex space located at 1127 Bedford Ave.
  • Our space is available on most school days.
  • Classes are 1.5 hrs. in length.
  • We have two class times available daily,  9:30AM -11:00 AM, and 12:30- 2:00 PM.
  • We offer single classes as well as series.
  • Series of classes run anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks.
  • Up to 30 students may attend hand building classes.
  • Up to 10 students can attend wheel throwing classes.
  • Ages 3 -18 welcome.
  • Chaperones and teachers may come along and participate but they cannot keep their work.
  • All finished projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class due to the firing process. You must return to retrieve the work.

  • We are a now a licensed vendor by the Department of Education
  • Wheel throwing class capacity is max 10 Students
  • Handbuilding class capacity is max 30 Students

Sample Lesson Handbuilding (Class Series)

Week 1 - 9:30 am - 11 AM / Class 1 of 3
  • Clay Exploration - Kids will learn the unique qualities of clay
    through a series of activities. We will cycle through a few
    challenges designed to show kids the basic techniques.
  • Kids do not keep work from this class, this is a practice day we
    recycle the clay after class.
Week 2 - 9:30 am - 11 AM / Class 2 of 3
  • Bird sculpture project - This class is all about observing the form
    of a bird and learning how to make birds in clay. The teacher
    demonstrates step by step.
  • Work is stored on site and will be continued following week.
Week 3 - 9:30 am - 11 AM / Class 3 of 3
  • Bird sculpture project continued - This class is focused on making
    clay nests for the birds, adding details, and decorating the work
    with beautiful colors.
  • Finished work from this class will remain on site so we can
    complete the firing process. Work will be ready to be picked up in
    3 weeks.
