The work:
The spark of creativity for this piece came from the name of The Lantern Party itself. Inspired by classic Japanese paper lanterns, I carved porcelain to suggest the tension of paper over the classic wired lantern form, supported by wooden ribs (which are in this case dark brown clay). The porcelain, carved thin in some areas and thick in others provides a mottled translucency that goes deeper than the effect we expect from paper.

The artist:
Becca is a ceramicist living in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. Her work (also found under Dun Wood Ceramics) explores classic forms and the color and texture of polished raw clay.
